One of the more common trends in Interior Design in the home has been the idea of opening the space. It was a characteristic of older homes that rooms tended to be separate. The downstairs interior of a home built at the beginning of the last century would have quite a few doors. One example of this is a home built in 1917. The front door leads into a foyer. The foyer led to a hallway that ran the length of the house much in the manner of the breezeways of colonial style homes. Off the hallway were doors leading into the living room, the formal dinning room, and even into the kitchen. Each room was separate. The dinning room had two sets of doors, one leading to the foyer, and one leading to the kitchen.
A typical home built at the beginning of the current century would be more likely to have no doors in the downstairs section of the home except for bathrooms or a possible Master bedroom. Once a person enters the front door, the entire home is open to them. This creates an open and uncluttered feeling within the home that has made it very popular.
Yet one of the major losses of this century has been the loss of individual privacy. The intrusive cell phone, the World Wide Web, and even the open spaces of our homes have robbed us of a sense of our own private space. The popularity of such retro styles of design such as Old World and loft apartments should be a clue to the Interior Designer. A design concept that tended to basically divide the house into two separate sections could be the answer to this privacy issue.
The space in the home that is first entered by the front door is the public part of the house. It was this idea that led to the old sitting room. This was a place to greet guests. A separate formal dinning room still retains a bit of nostalgia. It harkens back to a time of family dinners or dinner parties. A dinning room table in the kitchen area does not generate the same ambience. In such a home, the private areas of the house would be the kitchen area, the family living area or den, and the bedrooms.
This is one idea on how interior design can create a concept that satisfies a certain client desire. The Chinese had definite ideas on the interior design of a home as well as the exterior. There was a proper way to lay out a home in order to be in harmony with the environment. It is very possible they knew exactly what they were doing.
