Some Famous Interior Designers

There are designers and then there are interior designers. Following are some famous interior designers that came up with a particular style you might want to use.

Some Famous Interior Designers

The art of Interior Design had its beginnings in the 1720's in Western Europe. The first designers came from different occupations and rather diverse backgrounds. By 1830, Interior Design had become a bit more of a separate craft, and Interior Designers and Decorators were responsible for some of the great revivals of classic Gothic and Rococo styles in England. Most of the designers in the 20th century had no formal training, but this did not mean that they were not highly imaginative and innovative. They paved the way for some of the great designers of the next century.

Sister Parish (1910-1994) was one of the famous Interior Designers of the 21st century. She was the first designer called in to decorate the White House during the great restoration begun during the Kennedy years. She was known for her use of traditional motifs in her decor. Although she gradually lost out to fellow designer, Stephane Boudin, her influence can still be seen in several of the White House rooms.

Stephane Boudin (1888-1967) was a French Interior Designer. He was hired to assist Sister Parrish and antique expert, Henri Francis du Pont, during the Kennedy White House Restoration. He so impressed the first lady that Mrs. Kennedy began to give him more and more responsibility. Eventually, he completely took over the project.

An example of a modern Interior Designer is Linda Barker. Barker was born in 1961 in England. She became a celebrity and brought the idea of Interior Design into popularity with a BBC television show called "Changing Room."  The show was a clinic in the development and execution of residential design concepts. The idea of proper use of space was just important to the concept of the show, as was the choice of color and types of furniture. As the rooms in the show were redone, a complete picture of the project management aspect of an Interior Decorator was illustrated.

One of the main trends in Interior Design in the current century is the movement toward environmentally friendly design. This great movement is called "The Green Movement." The next generation of famous designers will surely emerge from the ranks of designers concerned with Green. Interior Designers now need to pass strict study courses and pass certification examinations, but the need for imagination and innovative thought is still what separates the ordinary from the great and the famous.
