The Psychology of Color for Interior Design

Color is not only a visual thing, it carries an emotional aspect that impacts. The psychology of color for interior design is critical if you want to convey the right message.

The Psychology of Color for Interior Design

One of the key elements in Interior Design and interior decorating is the use of color. A designer understands that the choice of color should be made using other criteria than what paint is overstocked or on sale. There is a well developed and scientifically support psychology associated with colors. This means certain colors work well in certain rooms, and other colors do not. The Interior Designer needs to understand this psychology, but so too does the client. The client will be presented with some choices and personal preference must be balanced against the purpose of the room.

Blue is an ideal color for either gender. It has a tendency to cause relaxation. It is a soothing color that is also very spiritual and centered. It is ideal for bedrooms for this reason. It also tends to increase productivity. This makes it ideal for a child's bedroom if the child will be studying or doing homework in the room. Blue is not good in the kitchen. This may be traced to a primitive instinct against blue colored food. In any case, blue tends to suppress the appetite. Of course, if losing weight is a goal, blue might make a good color for the dining room.

Red increases blood pressure and respiration. It also makes people lose track of time. It does stimulate the appetite. The effects of this color are so powerful that it is better to use it as an accent rather than a primary color in most cases. Yellow is another color that causes problems. It leads to increased eye fatigue. It upsets babies and causes a loss of temper. Both red and yellow have several shades. Light yellow might be more acceptable, and pink is very feminine and does increase passion without the powerful effects of red.

Green is like blue. It relaxes, calms, and is considered a healing color. Orange is a warm and welcoming color that is very vital. It improves appetites, so it is good for kitchens, breakfast nooks, and dinning rooms. Grey is another good color. It enhances creativity, which makes it ideal for offices.

There are shades and variations of all colors, and just about any combination is available. Even black and purple have some uses in certain situations. Color is not an afterthought in a good Interior Design concept for a room. The proper use of color can increase the sense of space and influence the activity within the room.
