Medical Office Interior Design

A medical office is a location that needs to convey the correct relaxing theme for nervous patients. In short, medical office interior design is important.

Medical Office Interior Design

Any Interior Design specialty, or niche as they are called, has its own special challenges that dictate how an interior design concept will be formulated. A medical office is one such specialty. The medical office has quite a large amount of special needs that need to be considered. There is a need for privacy. Medical examinations and treatments need to be done away from other patients. There is a need for a patient waiting area that has a good traffic pattern and is a comfortable and non-threatening type of environment. It is important to keep patients calm and relaxed while waiting. Patients are going to be ill and scared and these conditions will tend to be upsetting.

The medical office has a need for staff space as well. Staff space will include a nurse’s station that will need to have functionality and comfort. There is also a need for administrative areas that are close to the patient waiting area, but also need space for storage of records. There should be private areas for employee breaks and staff meetings. The design concept needs to account for all of these various space demands.

One of the problems in Medical Office Design is the flow from a comfortable and non-threatening patient waiting area into a professional and sterile treatment and examination area. The waiting area must both provide ample seating for patients and not appear cramped or crowded. The choices of color and furniture style and materials should all be geared toward comfort and relaxation. The reception and administrative area should be close to the waiting area and between the waiting room and the treatment rooms.

The separation of treatment areas from the waiting area should be complete. It is unsettling to patients to see activity in the treatment areas. Privacy is extremely important, and even noise can be unsettling to a waiting patient. The nurse’s station should be centrally located in the treatment area to make nurse readily available to support treatments and examinations. There are two different approaches that can be taken to the decoration and design of treatment areas. It is possible to make them very plain and functional or to make them warm and non-threatening. The proper use of soothing colors and wall decorations that tend to relax and calm patients can be very effective even in a medical office.

There are always many approaches to any niche type of interior design. Interior Designers often specialize in various niches for this reason. A complete understanding of the overall needs of a medical office is the first step in developing the design concept. Once this is done, the possible designs are limited by the skill and imagination of the Interior Designer.
