Urban Interior Design

Although urban interior design may look simple, this style is rather difficult to achieve. As with any other type of style, there are certain elements that set this one apart from all the others.

In many ways, urban interior design is a lot like modern design. However, there is a slight difference between the two. While modern tends to encompass those things that are appreciative of space, urban is really about functionality. Within this type of scheme, you will find a lot of high gloss, a few colors, and many different pieces that are curved rather than classically lined. This sort of space often takes into consideration many Japanese concepts, which is why furniture and accessories are extremely minimal.

You won’t find a lot of dark woods and heavy pieces within this type of space. What you will find are modern materials such as plastics and metals along with pieces that are light and functional. While color seems to be a no-no when it comes to modern styles, this style has nothing against color as long as it is used as an accent. For example, walls are generally painted a stark white while accessories can often be translucent, colored, and set off to the side.

By now, you should be able to better grasp the urban interior design concept. If you are trying to achieve this look, begin by shopping in stores that do not include classic pieces. Modern furniture stores are your best bet, along with a few retro shops that may have some accessories that you can incorporate into your space. As with modern design, lighting is very important in this type of space, so make sure to find lots of rounded, generally metal, lights of all shapes and sizes.

One more note about lighting – if you are going to remodel an entire space, try and allow as much natural light as possible into the room. Natural light is far better than any type of fluorescent, and it will showcase your new style beautifully. Still, you will need a few artificial lights, so go ahead and include these…just make sure not to clutter the space too much.

Good luck with your new urban interior design scheme – you can do it! Just remember to keep those accessories simple, allow the walls to remain white, and only include functional items inside of your space.
