Japanese Interior Design

Eastern themes can become confusing if you are not careful about discerning Japanese interior design from other, similar, styles.

Traditional Japanese interior design includes elements of nature, balance, and color, while modern Japanese style is rather futuristic. For the sake of this article, we will look into those things that make up a traditional space. The most important thing to remember when trying to work with this style is that space must exist in order to a room to flow. In the end, a constant flow is what you want your room to reflect.

If you look at the world around you, you will see that space is the one thing bringing everything else together. Though it may seem as though various elements criss-cross, they all respect their individual space. This is the precise concept behind this particular style –space equals tranquility. This means that there must not be any type of clutter within the room at all. Furniture that is purchase for this sort of room must include clean, curved, lines that do not mix or mingle with anything else. Likewise, all fixtures and accessories must be functional and practical.

In many ways, Japanese interior design can feel modern, though this is due to the fact that modern style derives many of its key elements from the East. Tables should be low, colors should include reds, golds, and whites, and wall décor should only depict single items that are usually taken from nature. Another great way to evoke the East is to include a water element inside of your space.

While you don’t have to place a mini flower pond in the middle of your home, it wouldn’t hurt to put a water fountain, fish tank, or other water feature in the room. Water is the physical embodiment of flow, thus it give the illusion of harmony. If you are creating a living room space, go ahead and install a water fountain. If you are working on a bathroom space, think about a waterfall backsplash within the shower area (really, any room can benefit from this sort of fixture).

To begin finding your way towards Japanese interior design, pick up a few good books and magazines to help you along your way. In the end, you will find that this style is both soothing and comforting – two things that are essential to this design scheme.
