Italian Interior Design

Generally, it is best to break Italian interior design into a few different categories. Since Italy is a rather large country, home styles vary from region to region.

For the sake of this article, we will focus upon the Mediterranean area along with that ever-popular Tuscan area, since these are the two most popular styles. No matter which area you prefer, color, texture, and nature are key elements when creating these styles. To begin this Italian interior design journey, let’s start with that gorgeous Mediterranean region.

The first thing to think about when it comes to Mediterranean style is color. This area is simply bursting with color from every nook and crevice. Rooms should reflect the scenery, which means that a lot of deep blues, whites, and neutral sand colors should be used. Also, accent walls can be painted in vibrant red colors, though this should not be a dominant color. Materials used throughout homes in this area include tile, wood, and stucco, and furniture tends to be large and ornate (though it is rarely painted). In short, try to keep that sea in mind while you are decorating and you can’t go wrong. Now, let’s head to Tuscany for a bit of the country life.

The Tuscany region is all about the good things in life. From wines to cheese and the lazy attitude that people within this region have adopted, those that live in Tuscany know all about taking it easy. This area happens to be lush with green vines and gorgeous sunsets, which is why the color scheme for this type of style is orange, green, and beige with a bit of blue around the edges. You will also find heavy pieces of furniture in this region that have been crafted from wood. As you can see, both styles of Italian interior design are similar, though it’s the small differences that really make them stand out.

If you want the quintessential, overall, Italian look, bigger is always better-- large statues, lots of water features, and plenty of white, red, and green. No matter what region you decide to draw from, remember that furniture should always be rather elaborate, but not too overdone.

Go ahead and create Italian interior designs the way that you see them in your mind – chances are, you will find that nature, the sea, and the country are all reflected in everything that you choose.
