Interior Lighting Design

When it comes to your home, nothing is as important as interior lighting design. While most people don’t realize it, the right light can create or ruin a space.

Interestingly, most people tend to only have one light per room. Usually, this light is of the overhead variety. While overhead lights are ok for occasional use, they are not suitable when it comes to creating various moods throughout your home. Rather than settle for some bright fluorescent lights, consider taking this crash course in interior lighting design. Let’s begin with the number one reason why fluorescents just don’t cut it.

Have you ever been in a home where fluorescent lights are all around you? Even at the doctor’s office, fluorescents just have a way of making people uncomfortable. Unless you want to create a lab like atmosphere inside of your home, it is best to forego the fluorescent completely. Still, if you want to use some of these lights, place a frosted glass cover over them in order to mute the harsh rays slightly. Now, let’s talk about each room in your home on an individual basis. To begin, we will head to the bedroom.

The bedroom serves a lot of different purposes. It is a romantic spot, a functional spot, and a relaxing spot all rolled into one. So, you must have different lights to coincide with the various activities that you will be doing inside of this space. Add a few reading lamps, some table lamps, a few closet lights, and some dimmer switches for those romantic evenings. When it comes to the kitchen, interior lighting design is slightly different. Since you need more light in the kitchen, placing a lot of overhead lights (recessed lights work best) along with some smaller backsplash lights for those work surfaces. Remember, sometimes a kitchen is a gathering space, so include some lower lights too.

Hallways, living rooms, and dining rooms should all have an array of different lights. From overheads with dimmer switches to standing lamps that light the way, make sure that your home is full of fantastic light (also, don’t be afraid to try numerous lights in the bathroom – including candle light!).

Hopefully, you can now see how important interior lighting design is to any home. Once you begin to experiment with light, you’ll find that your house takes on a whole new look.
