Gothic Interior Design

Gothic interior design dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, though many are under the impression that this is a relatively recent phenomenon.

This type of style has been largely influenced by the Christian church, since many of the world’s most impressive cathedrals are largely ornate and massive. Throughout the years, this style has popped up now and again, and it was especially popular during the Victorian era. Lately, there has been a large subculture that seems to be resurrecting this type of décor one again. Throughout Europe, gothic interior design is prevalent, though it can also be found within North America.

Many different castles, public buildings, and universities have been styled based upon this décor. Some of the most important aspects of this style include pointed arches, tracery, lots of vaulting, flying buttresses, and various columns. If you want to create this look inside of your home, take into consideration materials such as stone, tile, stained hardwood, and rugs that create the impression of a grand castle. Also, play with colors such as ochre, black, gold, violet, and red. Essentially, taking the time to study medieval times will be well worth it.

Furniture wise, large heavy pieces will benefit your space, while modern pieces should be left out. Look for those chairs, tables, and couches that have been carved from wood and covered in materials such as crushed velvet. If you can close your eyes and imagine the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral in France or a castle like the one that Dracula may have lived in, you can easily create your own gothic interior design.

If it has been done correctly, this type of décor can be quite stunning. Many people love to allow this theme to flow throughout their home, though one room decorated in this manner can just as easily impress. If you aren’t too sure about this style, but you want to give it a whirl, focus upon one area of your home, then move on to the rest if you enjoy the way that it looks. The only thing to stay away from when it comes to this style is anything made from plastic that can be too “over the top.” Keep it simple, medieval, and antique – that’s all there is to it.

Once you have your gothic interior design set up, you are sure to love all those lush colors and heavy piece of furniture - - after all, this style was good enough for those kings and queens of old.
