Contemporary Interior Design

Confused by contemporary interior design? Since more and more people are paying attention to their homes, the various terms floating around can become rather mind boggling.

Contemporary interior design (or “modern”) consists of clean lines, lots of smooth pieces, and furniture that is free from any intricate detail. While some may find this type of style rather cold, it doesn’t have to be this way. Instead, today’s modern look is more about practicality and warmth than anything else, which may be why it has become so popular. There are many things to consider if you are trying to replicate this style, though the three most important elements are: color, metal, and texture.

Let’s begin with color. Modern interiors really thrive when they are painted using a neutral palette. Select colors like brown, taupe, eggshell, or white. Even though these colors will become your backdrop, you can easily place large splashes of bold color elsewhere in the room through various accent pieces. For example, if you add a bright red couch to a space that it entirely white, this will create a modern look. The trick is not to go too crazy with accessories, since simplicity is really key here.

Next, let’s focus upon the metal aspect of contemporary interior design. Steel, nickel, and chrome tend to play a large part when it comes to modern style. Not only should most of the fixtures inside of a modern space be made from metal, but furniture, lamps, and tables should all include metal accents. Lastly, let’s take a closer look at those textures found within this type of space. Since most of your modern home will include neutral colors and metal touches, it is important to incorporate silks, velvets, linens, and wools into your home as well.

Bathrooms can include rugs that are incredibly fluffy, towels that are thick, and shower curtains that are made from rough terry cloth. Family rooms can be filled with larger than life pillows, windows that are decorated with ornate fabrics and walls that have a bit of texture to them. The trick here is to avoid those things that are too ornate, which will detract from that modern look.

Contemporary interior design can be very warm and inviting if you tie it all together properly. Just remember those three elements that make this style work, and you’ll be immersed in modern in no time.
