Art Deco Interior Design
Love those roaring Twenties? Can’t get enough of those tempting Thirties? Art deco interior design takes the best from both of these eras in order to create a style that is elegant and glamorous.
Sleek, chic, and unique – those are the main themes to think about when trying to incorporate art deco interior design into your home. This style really takes geometry into consideration due to the many pieces of furniture from this era that are a clear reflection of the earlier Modernist movement. Pieces from this period often have lots of mirrors, clean lines, a few metal accessories, and plenty of glass. If you want to view a great example of this style, take a peek at the Chrysler Building. This building embodies all of the things that this period was all about.
Those materials often used to create this style include: aluminum, inlaid wood, lacquer, shagreen, stainless steel, and zebra skin. Patterns that were prevalent during this period are usually zigzagged, curved, or stepped. Also, you will find a lot of Chevron and Sunburst designs throughout pieces that come directly from this period. Often, this style can feel very modern due to the fact that it was modern when it first came into fashion.
In fact, many people would describe this style as caught somewhere between modern and old-fashioned, though the antique portion of this only comes from the age of the style itself. Art from this time would have to include various replicas of the great Andy Warhol, along with some older advertisements that come directly from this era (research various products that were popular during this time). Essentially, art deco interior design gave way to the splendor that was the 1940s.
The height of fashion during the 1940s was anything and everything to do with Hollywood. However, those pieces from the 1930s were clearly still important to designers during this time. Today, if you want to find authentic pieces from this time period, you will have to look throughout various antique shops and flea markets (thanks to the internet, this is a lot easier than it used to be!).
Creating an art deco interior design is fascinating given the many eclectic items that were built during this time. If you truly love the Twenties and the Thirties, you will find that this style is just what you have been missing.
